IRLOGI Breakfast Briefing - OpenStreetMap - Thurs 17th May 30-04-2012   7.30am Chartered Accountants House, Pearse Street, Dublin 2   OpenStreetMap is a free worldwide map, created by the public at large. The data is free to download and use under its open license. The map is constantly being improved, refined and extended by its worldwide user base, which now exceeds 550,000 registered editors, and the data is being widely used both inside and outside the Geographic Information community.   At this breakfast briefing, organised by IRLOGI, attendees will be given a whistle stop tour of the project, from its past to its future. Geomatics at DIT
As you may be aware there is only one Geomatics Bachelor level (BSc.)
educational course being delivered within Ireland and this is from
within the Department of Spatial Information Sciences (DSIS), DIT
Bolton Street, Dublin 1.

However, we in the Dept. are aware that this course needs to continue
to attract high quality applicants to secure its survival, and it is
obvious that this will only possible through improved promotion of the
course, the career and the profession itself in Ireland. Similar
vulnerability is currently being experienced by Geomatics educational
courses across the globe. At the core of this problem is a severe lack
of awareness of what ‘Geomatics’ encompasses both as discipline and as
a potential career.

It was felt that this BSc in Geomatics course (DT112) needed to broaden
its promotional work to include a new and innovative media clip
specifically developed to be utilized on social networking sites such
as YouTube™, Facebook™ etc. A Careers DVD is also planned.

The simple aim of this 5 minute animation is to answer the very
difficult question ‘What is Geomatics?’ which is often posed by
prospective students, educators in secondary educational system and the
general public. This clip visually details the breadth of Geomatics
professional competencies, the cross-sectoral nature of the discipline
and the inter-professionalism of Geomatics as a potential career path.

I would invite you to view it at
http://dit.ie/faculties/built/spatial-planning/animation/

If possible - could you set up a link from the Irlogi website (perhaps
the Education and Training pages?) to this media clip?

Many thanks and kind regards
Helen
