Volunteer Scheme to Kenya - Application date extended to Feb 29th.
In 2009, IRLOGI signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Regional Centre for Mapping and Resource Development (RCMRD) which is based in Nairobi, Kenya. The Centre was established in 1975 under the auspices of the UN Economic Commission for Africa and the African Union and has a remit to provide training and support to 15 African countries. The MoU provides for IRLOGI to send GI skilled volunteers to work at the Centre for periods of two months or more.
Aoife Dowling (NIRSA, NUIM) was the first volunteer to participate in the scheme, spending two months there in 2010. The initiative was successful from both the RCMRD and volunteer perspectives (See presentation at GIS Ireland 2010).
The application date for the 2012 Volunteer scheme has been extended until February 29th. A fund of €3000, sponsored by ESRI Ireland, is available for a volunteer to work in the centre for a minimum of two months with a preference for longer stays up to 6 months. For the latter duration, additional fundraising is suggested. The successful candidate are encouraged to present at a subsequent GIS Ireland conference.
